How To Deal With Driving Test Nerves

Nervous Wreck

No matter how ready for taking your test you might feel, most people get nervous on the big day itself. I failed my driving test first time round because I went to pieces with nerves, and it wasn’t helped by the fact that the assessor had a bit of a “grump” on that day and didn’t respond to my ice-breaker (but that was a long time ago).

Classic nervebusting techniques like “take a shot of whiskey” are no good here, so I’ve compiled a few useful tips to help you cope with the stress of preparing for and taking your driving test.

  1. Believe in the positive. You have a far greater chance of passing your test if you believe that it’s actually possible to achieve. Stop thinking “I’m going to fail”.
  2. Get a good night’s sleep before the test. If you wake fully rested you’ll be able to concentrate and focus on all the things you will need to remember during your test, which becomes one less thing to worry about.
  3. I keep hearing good things about “Bach’s Rescue Remedy” and “Kalms” – apparently they can be helpful for stressful situations.
  4. Make it a NICE day – Plan something to do either before or after the big event that you enjoy, for example a picnic in the park with friends, maybe some exercise – anything that you enjoy doing and puts you in a positive and happy frame of mind.
  5. Don’t tell everybody when your test is. This is a popular one! If you tell everyone on Facebook that you’re taking your driving test today, you’re might be a little embarrassed if your next status says that you failed! Take a little weight off your shoulders and give your friends a cool surprise when you pass.
  6. It’s actually part of the assessor’s job to make at least some attempt to “break the ice” and make sure you’re comfortable. They’re not all scary like mine was! On my second test I was lucky enough to get a different assessor and he much more friendly and put me totally at ease. At the end of the day, they are assessing your ability to drive, not how nervous you are. As long as you can perform the tasks and manouvers to the required standard, you’ll be in with a chance.
